For Thee We Sing: A Musical Tribute to Our Veterans
About the Program: From the frontlines, as in John Kanders deeply moving setting of A Letter from Sullivan Ballou, to the home front, as with the hopeful Tie A Yellow Ribbon, the program explores the complexities of war through music crossing the centuries. Other favorites, including White Cliffs of Dover, Ill Be Seeing You, and Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy which offered the often much-needed morale boost to soldiers and civilians alike. Ensemble Lyrae has commissioned two pieces written by local composers, Charles Tarver and Brian John. The first, a setting of the poem In Flanders Field and the second, an arrangement of the well-known The Battle Hymn of the Republic. The audience will be invited to raise their own voices in a sing-along of several beloved patriotic songs.
About Ensemble Lyrae: Inspired by the natural beauty and brilliance of the constellation Lyra, Ensemble Lyrae brings together five uniquely and highly talented musicians. While each shines as a soloist, together, these women form deep connections in performing duets, trios, and quartets. The pianist and four vocalists of Ensemble Lyrae seek to illuminate musical works often unknown or under-played. They also premiere cutting-edge pieces written specifically for the Ensemble and their remarkable sound. Whether performing in a spacious concert hall or a more intimate salon-style setting at home, these captivating Boston-based musicians enliven the audience's senses, engage their imaginations, and invite them to live in a world of timeless beautiful sound.
