Marrow: A Collective Diagnosis (or, we're just trying to figure out what's happening inside our bodies)
At once a macro look at society's relationship to their physical selves and a microcosm of imitated cellular activity, Marrow invites the audience to examine their own relationship to disease, wellness, and corporeality through an immersive, durational performance exhibit in an apartment setting. The space is simultaneously a home, a surgical ward, a recovery room, the nerve center of the brain, and a living, feeling/bleeding body.
Drawing parallels between home and one's physical form, Marrow unites the explorations of eight interdisciplinary artists in one space as they investigate health, illness, and living in the vast spectrum of well-ness (and falling-apart-ness). The performers put the body under a microscope seeing the cells, the nerves, the marrow; recreating the thoughts, images, and feelings of the unconscious mind. They experience pain and confusion, but they also find affinities with their own bones, joints, and DNA strands. While some become blood and muscle, some imagine medical practices from different eras, and others work to rebuild their feeling of comfort, happiness, and health.
In this home that is a living body, guests are free to move throughout the apartment under their own direction, ultimately requiring them to make decisions about what they witness and how they interact with the performance. Guides will be available, but the audience will also be free to roam the apartment for the duration of one hour, with performances and visual arts shown throughout that time. Refreshments and discussion will occur after the performance.
Audiences note (TW): content includes references to mental illness and depression. The venue is located up one flight of stairs. For accessible accommodations please contact coincidentals@gmail.com.
