Rock'n Roll
Canadian Premiere
Forty-three-year-old Guillaume Canet is fulfilled in life and has everything to make him happy. On a film shoot a twenty-year-old actress stops him in his tracks when she tells him that he is not very "rock," that he'd never really been it and, just to finish him off, that he's dropped the "list" of actors that anyone would like to sleep with... His life with Marion, his son, his country house, and his horses all make him look has-been and no longer really sexy... Guillaume understands that he must change everything, and fast. And he'll go to great, great lengths to do so, while his nearest and dearest look on with amazement.
Canet is more often seen in taut thrillers like La Prochaine Fois Je Viserai le Coeur or LHomme quon Aimait Trop, so its a pure joy to see him here poking fun at himself and real-life partner Marion Cotillard with such wild abandon. He doesnt hold back on lampooning his actors ego, cinemas obsession with youth and even takes a pot shot at the shoddy way actors are treated by casting directors à la La La Land. It works beautifully and Cotillard more than matches Canet for making fun of her image in the media of a serious, slightly manic actress. (Judith Prescott, Frenchcinemareview.com)
