VOLT Talks: The Risk in Aerial Showmanship with Kate Holmes
Contemporary circus often likes to despectacularise risk and avoid showmanship. However, in performing risk we also perform skill, so what can an expert aerial showman of the past teach us about risk? The most popular showman of her generation, the aerialist Lillian Leitzel, balanced the relationship between risk and skill to create a pleasurable thrill that helped make her an aerial star.
Including discussion; If risk is an aesthetic of aerial performance, then what is its role in contemporary circus?
Kate's doctoral research at the University of Exeter was prompted by her own amateur aerial practice and explored the cultural significance of female aerialists lives and performances in the 1920s and early 1930s in the UK and USA. Focusing closely on what aerial movement meant led to some general conclusions about aerial performance, including how risk is performed.
