VOLT Talks: Timeless Circus with Kate Holmes
Everyone thinks they know what circus is, whether it is contemporary or traditional. Yet circus isn't a timeless performance form. Instead it has adapted to different times and different national contexts. By describing two of the largest circuses of the 1920s, Ringling Bros and Barnum and Bailey Combined Show and Bertram Mills Circus, I will show that circus isn't quite as stable a term as one might first have thought. Circus owners may often have publicised circus as timeless, but how true is that?
Including discussion; what is a 'tradition' in our artform and what is time specific?
Kate's doctoral research University of Exeter was prompted by her own amateur aerial practice and explored the cultural significance of female aerialists lives and performances in the 1920s and early 1930s in the UK and USA. Focusing closely on what aerial movement meant led to some general conclusions about aerial performance, including how risk is performed.
