Four OClock Flowers and Special Guests at TCCC
On Saturday, September 30th, 2017, at 7:30 p.m. the Tompkins Corners Cultural Center will present the Four O'Clock Flowers with special guests.
Four O'Clock FlowersSomoa Wilson & Ernie Vegaare up to their necks in folk, gospel, country, blues, and jazz. Ernie is a master of many guitar sounds from Leadbelly to Charlie Patton. He performs the nuances that define the style. Somoa has caught the spirit of early blues singing, and makes the songs as alive now as they were then. Somoa keeps the faith with the down-home gospel of Vera Hall as well as the lowdown blues of Bessie Smith. The Flowers music offers a pared-down view of the styles still preferred by popular singers today. Many people have praised the Flowers previous performances at TCCC. They come to us from Brooklyns Jalopy Theatre, Newport Folk Festival and Sunny's Bar, and are returning for an extended encore.
They create music from the multicolored blossoms of traditional American music. They are not time travelers; they just sound that way, like visitors from what Greil Marcus calls the old weird America. And like their namesakes, The Four oclock Flowers illuminate the beauty of the night. Their music entices, intoxicates, maybe even heals us and then, as Willie Blackwell sings in Four oclock Flower Blues, when I think about it in the morningit makes my heart ache in the afternoon.
