SOLO SUNDAYS - 10/15/17
. W H A T I S S O L O P E R F O R M A N C E ?
Beyond stand-up and storytelling, solo theater creates casts of thousands - plus special effects - all bursting from a single performer. The results are hilarious and soulful, passionate and provocative, ablaze with personal vision.
ADY LADY ---------------------------------------- "Avon Walking"
By the time Ady is trudging through Sausalito, she's out of steam with a long way still to go. She's hot and sweaty and wants to scream at all these people cheering and waving and offering support, "DON'T LOOK AT ME!"
SAM SELLIMAN ---------------------------------------- "Turangawaewae - Where I Stand"
As soon as Sam saw the hostile words scrawled across her driveway, she stormed off to the neighbors house. She had to confront them. So many scenarios played in her head. What if they came back at her strong enough to shut her down? Would she find the strength to defend herself?Shes ten seconds away from finding out.
BETH MCLAUGHLIN ---------------------------------------- "Cocky"
In third grade, we were all encouraged to get ID bracelets with our name, address and phone numbers on them -- for when our small bodies were found after a Hiroshima-like blast, I guess, though we also had the Zodiac Killer -- and mine had some guy with a nimbus-like halo on the front, while Jenny Hill's only had rainbows and flowers, and mine said, "St. Christopher, protect us in our travels; In case of an accident, notify a priest." So, I guess, yes, technically, in a nuclear war, I am Catholic.
GINO ROSE ---------------------------------------- "Dance of the Spider: Rising From the Dread"
When Gene Thomas, sixth-grader at St. Bartholomew's Grade School, reaches into his lunch bag he doesn't pull out a sandwich. He pulls out a piece of pink paper-a love note from his melancholy mother. Joe Pellegrino, an unruly classmate sees the piece of pink paper. And the look of horror on Gene's face. Bad enough that Gene's last name already makes him feel less than a real Italian. Here's one more unsettling reminder that he's not the tough Italian kid he'd like to be. Of course, he does have the family depression: a secret legacy that's been passed down from generation to generation. Southern Italian depression even has its own theme song, featuring a large, hairy spider. What's a poor Italian boy to do?
