Mark Twain's America: A Concert of Vintage, Traditional and Classical American Music from Twain's Day
Pianist Jacqueline Schwabs signature stylein turns flowing, percussive, classical, folksy, spare, embellished, meditative, passionate, elegiac and sprightlyis hard to categorize but easy to recognize. Drawing on the jazz/classical improvisational spirit of Keith Jarrett and the touch of George Winston .... (New England Folk Almanac), Jacqueline Schwab brings more feeling and intensity to music than anyone I know. Her playing is insistent, physical, heartfelt and ... unusually moving (Ken Burns). Her distinctive playing infuses the sound tracks of Burns Grammy-winning Civil War, Baseball, Lewis and Clark, Mark Twain, The War, The National Parks, among others. She has performed at the White House for President Clinton, and, with Scottish singer Jean Redpath, on public radios A Prairie Home Companion and on CBS Late Show with David Letterman. She performs solo and duo concerts, plays for traditional dancing and teaches students around the US. Jacqueline graduated from the New England Conservatory in Boston, majoring in piano improvisation.
For her concert at The Musical Offering, Jacqueline will perform her arrangements of American heart songs and dance tunes, honoring the improvisational spirit of historical community music, with fresh modern sounds. Her program will include Stephen Foster and Civil War parlor songs, Victorian ballroom music, Scots and Irish fiddle tunes, hymns and spirituals, and ragtimeplus vintage Latin waltzes and tangos, classical pieces, and more. Mark Twain called tunes remembrancers. Jacqueline will speak about them, sharing her love for the power of music to transport us into our own past and also on to new horizons full of exciting new possibilities.
