Downton Abbey Hat Making Experience
Have you ever fancied yourself in a Downton Abbey style Cloche hat or a vintage 50s pillbox? Milliner Sahar Freemantle who has made hats for Downton Abbey and provided hats for singers such as Katie Perry and Ellie Goulding is holding a special workshop on how to make felt hats, to share some of the secrets of her trade. Using traditional techniques and equipment, participants will use the same wooden hat blocks as Sahar used in making the historically accurate 1920s hats for Downton Abbey, or they choose can make smaller 40s and 50s style percher hats or something more contemporary. All participants will learn about stretching felt around the blocks, and finish with their own hat to take home with them. This is a weekend-long course, the first day will be blocking the felt around the hat blocks (ie stretching and pinning), and the second day will be wiring, trimming, and decorating.
There is only one of each block available and participants will be given the chance to reserve a block of their choice as they book, so it is done on a first come first served basis (as they book not who arrives first on the day!).
The standard felt each participant will be issued will be a chocolate brown 100% wool felt. Variations (in colour or type of felt) can be arranged for a small fee. If you choose to block a smaller percher hat instead of a full hat, you may be able to make two hats in the weekend, for which there will be a charge of £15 for each extra felt used.
Saturday starts at 12pm and finishes at 3:30pm. Sunday starts at 12pm and finishes at 4pm. These times are approximate.
Refreshments and a healthy and delicious lunch will be provided on Saturday. On Sunday refreshments will be provided but no lunch. (you can bring a packed lunch or there are many places around to get lunch)
It is advisable that you bring an apron.
Cost is £190 per person (includes lunch and all material exclusive of extra felts.).
