David Jacobs-Strain in Concert with Bob Beach
The Marshall Grange is pleased to present an evening with singer songwriter and prodigious slide guitarist David Jacobs-Strain who will be accompanied by his longtime musical partner Bob Beach on the harp. The show begins at 7:30 P.M. on Friday September 29 and tasty treats and pleasant beverages will be available.
David Jacobs-Strain is a fierce slide guitar player, and a song poet from Oregon who has been on the musical road since he was a kid. I first heard him about 20 years ago at the World Music Festival in Grass Valley. I was crossing the green when I heard someone on the main stage tearing up the crowd with his virtuoso slide guitar work and bluesy vocals. I was totally blown away when I saw that the music was coming out of not an old blues singer but a 16-year-old boy prodigy. Since that time David has dropped out of Stanford, traveled the world with his guitar, and gained a reputation for virtuosity and a spirit of emotional abandon. His live show moves from humorous, subversive blues, to delicate balladry, and then swings back to swampy rock and roll. Its a range that ties him to his own generation and to guitar-slinger troubadours like Robert Johnson and Jackson Browne. Im fascinated by the way that rural blues inscribes movement and transience. The music that frees a singer keeps them on the run; theres a crossroads where a thing can be enchanting but dangerous; damaging but beautiful.
Joining David for this performance will be Bob Beach, a masterful harmonica player who has honed a fine ear and unique sound over his 40+ year career. He and David first met in 2002, and after crossing trails at festivals, conferences and other music venues over eight years, they were convinced that working together could create something very special. Since 2010 they have been doing exactly that at festivals, clubs, house concerts and more. Their live show are special, moving from humorous, subversive blues, to delicate balladry, and then swinging back to swampy rock and roll.
