About the Band:

Morris Goldberg

Recognized as one of the early pioneers of Cape Jazz, along with Dollar Brand and Chris McGregor.
Goldberg left South Africa in the Apartheid years to study in New York. He is also a virtuoso clarinet and flute player.
He has recorded a number of his own albums and is known as a member of the Harry Belafonte band and for his work with Paul Simon. Goldberg has toured and recorded albums with his own band, OJOYO. He calls their sound safrojazz, presenting the music as a combination of South African and American jazz music.

Bakithi Kumalo

Born in the Soweto township of Johannesburg, surrounded by relatives who loved music and actively performed. Kumalo worked as a session musician in South Africa during the 1970s and early 1980s, eventually becoming a top session bassist and accompanying international performers during their South African tours.
In 1985, Kumalo was introduced to Paul Simon by producer Hendrick Lebone during the sessions for Simon's Graceland album. Kumalo traveled with Simon to New York to finish the sessions, and after the accompanying concert tour, "spent several years commuting between Soweto and New York City" before permanently settling in the United States. Kumalo has toured regularly with Simon since then. He has also released several solo records, and continued to perform as a session musician with artists such as Joan Baez, Cyndi Lauper, Herbie Hancock, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Randy Brecker, Grover Washington Jr., and Mickey Hart.

Diego Urcola

Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, threetime Grammy nominee Diego Urcola has been a member of the Paquito D'Rivera Quintet since 1991. Additionally, the oftindemand trumpeter performs regularly with the legendary saxophonist Jimmy Heath, the Caribbean Jazz Project and the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni AllStar Big Band.
Urcola's musical studies began at the age of 9, in the Music Department of the Colegio Ward where his father Ruben served as director. Urcola toured extensively with the United Nations Orchestra under the leadership of DRivera after Dizzy Gillespies death. Urcola earned second place honors at the 1997 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Trumpet Competition. In 1999 the late vibraphonist, Milt Jackson, formed an allstar big band, asking him to participate. In 2001, as part of the D'Rivera quintet, he earned a Latin Grammy; the following year, Urcola, again working with D'Rivera, took part in the film Calle 54 the acclaimed music documentary.

David Bravo

Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, songwriter/composer David Bravo expressed an interest in music at the age of seven. Originally trained classically on the piano, David grew to love jazz and began composing his own music that he performed locally. In 1976, he moved to New York to pursue his music career further. In 1980, he established a working relationship with Eumir Deodato. Deodato recorded 3 of David's songs on the Night Cruiser album. Since then, he's been a member of CBS recording act SHY TALK and had toured or recorded with Harry Belafonte, Jack Bruce (Cream), Debbie Harry, Bo Diddley, and Hugh Masekela. David has also collaborated with "hit" songwriters Donald Markowitz (I've Had The Time Of My Life) and Toni C (Whitney Houston's Love Will Save The Day.)
David's projects include work with collaborator Robert Held. Together they've written jingles for commercials such as Prevention Magazine and the music for the ESPN show Out of Control. They did the music score and composed various songs for the feature film Federal Hill starring Nicholas Turturro.
