Food Security Coalition Ripple Effect Mapping
On October 5th, the Food Security Coalition will gather to conduct a 'Ripple Effect Mapping' to identify, celebrate and map out the successes and impacts of the Coalition's work so far, as well as a 'train the trainer' portion which will allow participants to facilitate their own evaluations in the future. The morning session, from 9 am to noon, will involve mapping the ripple effects of the Coalition's work and newly formed partnerships. Debra Hansen, one of the original architects of the method, and one of our facilitators for the event, says this tends to be an incredibly positive and inspiring experience for those who participate. The afternoon session will turn to training on how to conduct a mapping exercise in the future, a 'train the trainer,' that will allow us to bring this method back to the many other collaborative efforts we're involved in in the Gorge. The facilitators will map and code this information in a format that can be built upon and used to communicate our successes with funders, stakeholders and the public in a an accessible and systematic way. Mapping Process: In a focus group setting, storytelling initiates the mapping process. Groups build on each others stories, while the facilitator maps the accomplishments, partnerships, unique contributions and gaps in delivery identified by participants. By visualizing all the learning, actions and condition changes that happened as a result of a program, workshop series or event, the process can show communities, program leaders and funders how their work interacts with the community system as well as where there are multiple ripples and clusters of positive activity and where projects were less productive.
Training goals:
Understand how Ripple Effects Mapping (REM) might measure program impacts; Understand the benefits of REM and when its an appropriate tool for program evaluation; Learn how to use Appreciative Inquiry in gathering stories Build skills to engage groups in mapping their accomplishments Learn how to write appropriate prompts to elicit program ripples; Experience the mind-mapping technique through experiential exercises; and Learn how to use the data to inform participants and stakeholders.
