Great Discussions -- Freedom From Want -- Paul Worsham and Mayor Heidi Harmon
Thursday October 19,  2017 10am - 12 noon

Union Bank, San Luis Obispo

$5 for LLCC members, $10 for non-members

Great Discussions 2017 is a  participatory course designed for those informed and thoughtful people among us who love to engage in real discussion and respectful debate over issues of the day. This course is a forum for exchanging ideas about international and domestic public affairs and America's place in the world.

The subject of this and the next meeting in November will be The Four Freedoms.

The Four Freedoms were goals articulated by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt on January 6, 1941. In an address known as the Four Freedoms speech (technically the 1941 State of the Union address), he proposed four fundamental freedoms that people "everywhere in the world" ought to enjoy:  Freedom of speech; Freedom of worship; Freedom from want; and Freedom from fear.

This Great Discussion course is a four-part series and we follow  next with a discussion of Freedom from Want  Our guest speaker, San Luis Obispo Mayor Heidi Harmon will talk to us about how government organizations at all levels can address the "wants" of all Americans

Arriving in San Luis Obispo thirty years ago as a college student, Heidi Harmon found the charm and community irresistible and she stayed to make a life here. She graduated with a degree in early childhood education from Cuesta College, followed by a BA in liberal studies from Cal Poly.  Heidi worked as an early childhood educator in San Luis Obispo for many years. She ran both a singalong music program for preschool children, and a home cleaning business., learning about SLO's dynamic economy. She is a proactive, committed advocate for environmental issues in the area. As the Director of SLO 350 and a point person with Protect SLO- Stop Oil Trains, Heidi was able to work with many local businesses, leaders and community members to fully understand the scope of environmental, conservation and sustainability challenges our community faces.  As mayor, Heidi has focused on issues such as homelessness and hunger.

While Paul Worsham's education and career focused on consumer electronics marketing, he has a deep and active interest in world affairs and America's place in the world.
