Rios Caledonia Adobe. A Central Coast Window Into Californias All But Forgotten Rancho Period-- Joe Carotenuti, Joyce Herman & Barbara Bilyeu

Most Californians are familiar with the Mission Period and the Gold Rush. Less familiar is the period in between, roughly from 1820 to 1850, when Mexican and California ranchers ruled the range and defined Central Coast culture.

This lecture course will explore the Rancho era through the eyes of Petronilo Rios and the remarkable adobe hacienda he built in 1846. The hacienda, now known as the Rios-Caledonia Adobe, was built on property belonging to the Mission San Miguel. Against all odds the adobe has survived many successive owners and uses to become one of the most stunning features of the Central Coast historical landscape. The Adobe, museum, and gift shop are now open to the public.

Library manager Barbara Bilyeu will introduce participants to the extensive library.

Joe Carotenuti, the City Historian/Archivist for the City of San Luis Obispo. He is a regular contributor to Journal Plus and has written over 150 articles on local history. Joe will provide an overview of the Rancho Period and trace the history of the Rios Caledonia Adobe.

Joyce Herman has volunteered at the Rios-Caledonia Adobe since 1968 and has been its guiding light through its renovation and reopening. Joyce will amplify Joes remarks and conduct a tour of the adobe.

Barbara Bilyeu manages the Rios-Caledonia Adobe Research Library.
