Painted Mandolin featuring Joe Craven
How do you possibly spice up the acoustic musical gumbo cooked up by Jerry Garcia over his 50 years of pickin? You need more than great players, you need highly creative, innovative, spice masters to make it hot and fresh and imminently danceable. You need Painted Mandolin! -- Tom Miller, Concert Coordinator, Don Quixotes International Music Hall, Felton, California
"Painted Mandolin has hit on an amazing combination of symbiosis playing old Jerry Garcia tunes, traditionals, and the good ol' Grateful Dead. They get their audiences up and moving!" Jay Saber, The Wheel Company "Joe Craven brought me to tears during a most heartfelt fiddle solo in Peggy-O. I had to put down my camera, I couldn't see through the viewfinder with tears welling up like that. And that, my friend, is why I go see live music." Mike Pegram, Photographer
With jamming instrumentals and soaring harmonies, Painted Mandolin is an upbeat and energetic show that explores the acoustic side of Jerry Garcia all the way from his early Jug Band days, to Old And In the Way, through the Grateful Deads Reckoning period, to the Garcia/Grisman band. This musical treat features Joe Craven (Mandolin/Violin/Percussion) a former member of the Garcia/Grisman Band from 1991-1994 and a member of The David Grisman Quintet from 1989-2004; Matt Hartle (Lead Guitar/Banjotar) from Spirit of 76, The China Cats, and Shady Groove; Larry Graff (Rhythm Guitar), better known as the talented Airy Larry from Slugs N' Roses and the Banana Slug String Band; and last but not least, Roger Sideman (Bass) from The China Cats.
Multi-instrumentalist Joe Craven is no stranger to the stages of the Oaksong Music Society. In 2017, he got the audience up and dancing with his high-energy no genre left behind trio, Joe Craven and the Sometimers In 2014 did the same with the Afro-Rhythm world beat sounds of Mamajowali. In 2011, he wowed the audience at Bernies Guitar with a rare appearance with blues phenom David Jacobs-Strain.
Joe Craven is an award-winning creativity educator, former museum curator, actor, music festival emcee, Director of RiverTunes Music Camp, a Co-Director for the Wintergrass Youth Academy. Joe Cravens love of performing music has put him in many musical genres and alongside many musicians, from jazz violinist Stephane Grappelli and classical cellist Yo-Yo Ma, to Jerry Garcia, David Lindley, Howard Levy, Jason Marsalis and fusion banjoist Alison Brown and groups such as Psychograss and The Horseflies. For 17 years, he was percussionist and violinist for mandolinist David Grisman. In 2009, the Far West division of Folk Alliance International awarded Joe its highest honor "Best of The West". An educator for over 25 years, Joes unique programs have inspired; communities in Costa Rica, corporate heads in Contra Costa, CA, a dozen different music camps, thousands of school kids from Stockton to Scotland and college students from Alaska to Alabama. Whether jamming with musicians from Morocco or Mendocino, performing solo, with his daughter Hattie, The Joe Craven Trio, Mamajowali, The Sometimers, Painted Mandolin, or playing Carnegie Hall to busking on Cannery Row Joes at home and loving every minute!
