Providence Mandolin Orchestra at Lily Pads
We are very pleased to welcome back the Providence Mandolin Orchestra, under the direction of Mark M. Davis, as part 2 of our special Music at Lily Pads celebration in October!
The origins of the Providence Mandolin Orchestra can be traced back to performancesin the first decades of the twentieth century with Giuseppe Pettine and William Place Jr. The modern version of the PMO dates from 1971, when it was revived by the Rhode Island teacher Hibbard Perry. Since then the PMO has become one of the leading American mandolin ensembles with regular performances throughout the eastern United States and Western Europe. The PMO is dedicated to the performance of contemporary music, including pieces written for the ensemble. In recent years the PMO has embarked on an ambitious program of joint performances with leading European mandolin ensembles from France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands.
PMO Music Director Mark Davis began his guitar and mandolin studies with Hibbard Perry, and continued with Siegfried Behrend from whom he inherited his fascination with contemporary forms of musical expression. Davis has been Music Director of the Providence Mandolin Orchestra since 1989. He tours and records in duo with the guitarist Beverly Davis, and is the founder/director of the New American Mandolin Ensemble.
THE INSTRUMENTS OF THE ORCHESTRA:The Providence Mandolin Orchestra is basically a string orchestra made up of plucked string instruments, with sections of mandolins, mandolas, liuto cantabile, classical guitars and bass.
THE REPERTOIRE:The music performed by the Providence Mandolin Orchestra reflects many different countries, genres, and time periods.
