Tap Dance Workshop with the Legendary Brenda Bufalino
Ms. Bufalino regularly performs as a tap percussionist in jazz and new music ensembles. She appeared with The Copasetics in The Newport Jazz Festival at Avery Fischer Hall in NYC with the Benny Carter All Star Band. She choreographed and performed with her company in Louise Tiranoffs production of The Four Seasonsa Jazz Version in collaboration with composer/saxophonist Benny Golson, at The Hudson Guild Theater in New York City. She appeared with vocalist Teri Roiger, and John Menegon at The Jazz Standard also in NYC, celebrating music by composer Billy Strayhorn.
In l986 Ms Bufalino founded her companies The American and International Tap Dance Orchestras that toured extensively, nationally and internationally for over ten years. The ATDO, performed in all major theaters: Lincoln Center, The Danny Kaye Theater, The Joyce Theater, The Appollo Theater, The Dance Theater Workshop etc. The American Tap Dance Orchestra, appeared in the PBS special with Gregory Hines Tap Dance In America. Their concerts included an Eastern European tour for US State Department.
She has received The Flobert Award, Tap City Hoofers and Hall of Fame Award, Dance Magazine Award, and The Bessie award for Life Time Achievement. She is a NYFA and NEA fellow, and two of her choreographies were deemed American Masterpieces and awarded reconstruction grants by the NEA
Ms. Bufalino created The Tap Opera Gertrudes Nose, with music by jazz vocalist Jay Clayton. Gertrudes Nose, was performed with the ATDO and as a duet with Ms. Clayton on both the East and West Coast, and throughout Germany. Their CD Rhythms from The Heart, was taped at their New School performance Jazz at Six, with pianist Frank Kimbrough.
A seminal work for the ATDO, "Touch Turn Return," was created with composer Carmen Moore. Their premiere performance was at The Judson Church Theater, and was then performed at the Joyce Theater, NYC.
With Bassist Joe Fonda , and percussionist Yogo Posch, Ms. Bufalino toured Germany, Austria and Slovenia in a concert of new and improvised music, and poems for performance.
Ms. Bufalino is a collaborator/performer with The MaD Theatricals creating new work for New England audiences, with Josh Hilberman and Drika Overton with original music by Paul Arslanian. Together they have created, performed, and toured Claras Dream, a Tap Nutcracker, and Off the Beaten Path A Jazz & Tap Odyssey" celebrating the work of environmentalist Rachel Carson.
Her CDs include: Coup de Foudre with Renatto Sellani and Massimo Morricone, Dancing My Dancein Another Persons Dream, with Joe Fonda, Cary DeNegris and Marc Josefsburg andRhythms from The heart with Jay Clayton and Frank Kimbrough. She appears on Joe Fondas CD From the Source which includes Anthony Braxton and Vickie Dodd.
A writer of essays and numerous articles, Ms. Bufalino wrote the forward and afterward for the re-issue of Jazz Dance by Marshall and Jean Stearns. Her memoir, Tapping the Sourcetap dance stories, theory and practice, and her book of poems, Circular Migrations, are both published by Cod Hill Press, available along with numerous instruction and concert DVDs on her web site Brendabufalino.com.
She teaches and is the Artistic Mentor for The American Tap Dance Foundation, in New York City.
