Speakers will discuss mindfulness and its application to addressing the stigma associated with mental illness as well as its effectiveness in alleviating many symptoms of mental illness. Mindfulness is the psychological process of bringing one's attention to experiences occurring in the present moment. Studies have shown that worry and rumination (going over and over past experiences or issues) contributes to mental illnesses such as depression and anxiety. Scientific evidence is also showing mindfulness-based therapies are effective in alleviating many symptoms of mental illness and helping everyone practice good mental health. We will discuss how mindfulness practices can be effective in reducing the stigma associated with mental illness and how spiritual practices such as prayer can be used in the mindfulness process.
