Impossible Marriage
Written by Beth Henley, "Impossible Marriage" is a witty and insightful play full of lush human landscapes. The playwright is best known for her play, "Crimes of the Heart," which earned both a Tony Award for best play and The Pulitzer Prize for drama. This play deals with an impending, ill-fated wedding set at a country estate in Savannah, Georgia. It is a comedy of manners, full of polite gestures, witty observations, and glaring subtext. The brisk pace and flowing repartee are reminiscent of the plays of Oscar Wilde. The main theme of the play is the conflict between social norms and individual passions and has a flavor of Russian playwright, Anton Chekhov, whom Henley has cited as an influence. Young Pandora is set to marry the much older and somewhat shopworn Edvard. As the glorious moment approaches, everyone's yearnings rise to the surface revealing the questionable underpinnings that hold this family together. With her characteristic gimlet eye, Ms. Henley has crafted a fun and funny play that allows us to laugh at our own foibles.
Directed by Mark Davis and featuring Peter Leonard-Solis, Stephanie Charlton, Carole Weidman, Patrick Dunning, Olivia Gould, Scott Sullivan and Sanford Farrier as the colorful cast of characters.
