Songs of the Steppes & the Shtetl with Polina Skovoroda-Shepherd
"Singer Polina Shepherd combines virtuoso vocal talent with raw emotional delivery. She plumbs energy from the same archetypical sources that make blues and flamenco singing so powerful." --Portuguese American Journal

Born in Siberia and now based in Brighton UK, Polina learned music as a child in a Russian Jewish home where songs were frequently sung at the family table after eating borsht and drinking homemade wine. Polina joined Russias first klezmer band in 60 years, Simcha, and soon became the principal Yiddish choir leader of the former Soviet Union, arranging and composing Yiddish material for large groups of voices and touring internationally with her Quartet Ashkenazim. Since moving to the UK in 2003, Polina continues to travel the world performing solo, as a trio with Sklamberg & The Shepherds, and with many other bands and projects.
For her vocal power, she has been called the Robert Plant of Klezmer (Seth Rogovoy review). She now leads four choirs in and works as an educator teaching vocal workshops internationally. Her specially developed teaching methods are based on specific East European sound, ornamentation, modal experimentation with attention to stylistic details, history and context.
