Live at Studio5: BEN LEWIS
Ben Lewis, piano Patrick Mulcahy, bass Jon Deitemyer, drums Special Guest Vocalists: Sarah Marie Young and Matt Lewis
I first heard Ben Lewis play several years ago when he appeared with Typhanie Monique at the Whiskey Lounge. Immediately I mean even during the sound check I could tell he was one of those compelling, inventive players I just had to follow. He combines clever harmonies with beautiful and often humorous melodic ideas in such a quick, effortless way that I ended up wanting to run home and practice or quit. Ive been a huge fan of his ever since.
Tragically, about a year ago, Ben was involved in a horrible accident. He fell from a ladder and suffered multiple broken bones and a life-threatening concussion. Its been a helluva long, rough road, but thankfully, Ben has completely recovered. In a period when we are bombarded with relentlessly awful news, isnt it nice to hear a story that ultimately turns out ok? I am honored to announce that Ben will be performing an evening of his own music at Studio5 on October 27th. I hope you can join us for a joyous evening of music-making from this masterful, inspiring artist. I asked Ben if there was anything hed like to say about this event and this is what he sent me:
"We all face our own challenges in life, and this last year has been no exception for my family and me. Through my own experience I've learned not only what I was capable of, but what a tremendous outpouring of support is possible in times like this.
With this performance I want to let music tell our story and let the emotion it arises in the listener perhaps be a unique reflection of their own path. Fear, guilt, pain, worry, joy, humor and love these are all feelings that can find voice through music, and I believe there can be healing in the sharing of that experience.
The way the world is today there is power in the purity of music and its ability to lift us up.
Im so pleased to be joined by some of my favorite musicians - drummer Jon Deitemyer and bassist Patrick Mulcahey. This is a chance for me to share some my own compositions and how they connect to my life, and allow the wonder and beauty of improvisation to flow freely between us.
Please consider joining us at Studio5 in Evanston on October 27th, 2017 to be part of this special concert."
We'll be recording this performance for Chicago Jazz Live on WDCB, so you'll be part of the studio audience! See you there! -SR
