Butoh Dance: Alchemy of the Spirit
"Butoh Dance: Alchemy of the Spirit"
A two-day masterclass with Jordan Rosin, hosted by Coin & Ghost
September 7th and 8th, 2017 -- 6-9pm

Drawing on a decade of body-based research into energy anatomy, yoga, Butoh dance, and
related disciplines, award-winning physical theatre artist and educator Jordan Rosin (Intl: Butoh Medea, FringeNYC: Butoh Electra, Artistic Director Emeritus of NYCs The Ume Group) is honored to be offering his signature Butoh Dance: Alchemy of the Spirit workshop for the very first time in Los Angeles, CA.

In this workshop, participants are guided on a journey of spiritual alchemy using the techniques of Butoh dance. Incorporating key exercises from multiple schools of the form, Jordan also draws on shamanic ritual, energetic anatomy, yogic philosophy and physical theatre to create a safe and open space for healing, deep personal transformation, and the revelation of tacit knowledge hidden within the darkness of our bodies. Performers and non-performers alike will use movement as a pre-text for deep self-investigation and gain an embodied understanding of the nature of our bodies as both objects and stories.

This workshop is appropriate for performers and non-performers, people of all ages and
abilities.

Benefits of the work include
-Endurance
-Physical awareness, mobility and strength
-Mental fortitude
-Expanded creativity and access to the creative power of the subconscious
-Reference points for non-hierarchical interpersonal resonance

Ankoku Butoh (dance of darkness) is a style of dance and philosophy of creating total theatre
originating from Japan in the mid twentieth century. Often marked by grotesque imagery and
taboo themes, the main aim of the work is to reveal tacit knowledge hidden in the body, and to promote self-realization through discovery of your most authentic movement. Butoh training promotes physical endurance and expressiveness, spiritual consciousness, and creativity.

Jordan Rosin is a physical theatre artist, teacher, director and performer belonging to the third generation of the avant-garde movement form Butoh. His main butoh teachers are Joan Laage, Vangeline, & Tetsuro Fukuhara, though he has trained with numerous others including Ko Murobushi, Katsura Kan, Diego Pinon, and Daiichiro Yuyama. Jordan was a co-founder & Producing Artistic Director of the NYC-based physical theatre ensemble, The Ume Group from 2011-2016; has been a frequent collaborator with the butoh company Ren Gyo Soh; and is creator of DREAM DANCES™. Recent choreography include the internationally acclaimed Butoh Medea (Best Physical Theatre, United Solo Festival 2015; Best Choreography, United Solo Festival 2015); The Ume Groups Butoh Electra; Facet (Hollywood Fringe Festival); Isis Variations (FringeNYC 2014, CoolNY 2014 Dance Festival); Dream Dances; and Lysistrata Project. He is currently pursuing an MFA in Ensemble-Based Physical Theatre at DellArte International in Blue Lake, CA. www.jordanrosin.wordpress.com / @JordanRosin

Coin & Ghost is a Los Angeles-based theatre company known for its imaginative remixing of known mythologies. The company defines mythology as any set of stories that  imultaneously SHAPES and IS SHAPED BY a culture. So Traditional Greek and Roman myths count, sure, as do any cultures creation myths. But when viewed through this lens, Shakespeare has a clear mythology to it, as do comic books, Tennessee Williams, and other folklore.

We use these stories as a base, a structure, even as a playground  but not as a rulebook. Each project begins on the well-worn road of a known mythology, and then branches off on its own unique, wild path.

Our first full-length production, Too Faust, Too Furious will premiere in Los Angeles in the Fall of 2017.

--- We are dedicated to adventurous and accessible theatre. C&G uses cultural mythology as a base for creative works and educational programs, inspiring empathy and imagination throughout the community and around the world. ---
