Serious About Skin Symposium

WHAT IS SASSY? Serious About Skin Symposium is Community Memorial Health System's first wound and ostomy educational program open to the medical community local to the Ventura and surrounding areas. The vision for this program is to provide additional education support for local nurses and other clinicians specifically in the areas of wound, ostomy and continence care.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND? RNs, LVNs, nursing students or any other clinician interested in wound/ostomy care.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: - Describe the prevalence, identification, and impact of malnutrition in hospitalized patients. - Discuss current nutrition intervention strategies. - Provide a scientific update on the impact of oral nutritional supplements to improve outcomes. - Distinguish between wounds and pressure injuries. - Define and identify the stages of pressure injuries. - Understand and identify the components of wound assessment. - Describe basic wound care principles. - Identify appropriate dressings for various wound types and presentation. - Describe the anatomy and physiology of the gastrointestinal tract. - List the indications, characteristics and management issues for an ileostomy, colostomy & urostomy. - Describe the presentation, preventative strategies and management options for a minimum of two acute ostomy challenges. - Discuss skin integrity/pressure ulcer management utilizing evidence-based practice per WOCN and NPUAP to include standard of care, guidelines, policies and procedures and government regulations. - Discuss the most recent definitions per NPUAP guidelines including avoidable vs unavoidable pressure ulcers and DTI. - Discuss definition and implications of skin failure. - Discuss the factors leading to litigation and the role of the nurse, wound consultants, other clinicians and risk manager. - Discuss legal care practices for the health care clinicians and risk managers.
