MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell with Conan O'Brien
Lawrence O'Donnell has The Last Word on politics now more than ever. And now, he reaches back to another election whose consequences might very well be just as profound as the election of 2016.
Yes, the 2016 Presidential election was a game changer. Yes, the race and its outcome shocked pretty much everyone around the world-- including the winner. But in his new book, Playing with Fire: The 1968 Election and the Transformation of American Politics, Lawrence O'Donnell reminds us that 48 years ago, there was another election that shook the country to its core: the election of 1968, showcasing a Democratic party-- and a country-- in revolt.
And what an election it was. LBJ was the sitting President. Richard Nixon, a brilliant tactician, challenged the Increasingly unpopular LBJ. LBJ did not anticipate a challenge by someone from his own party--but then came anti-war activist Senator Eugene McCarthy. And soon, another Democratic betrayal, but this one more bitter: Robert F. Kennedy. LBJ dropped out, assassination removed RFK, and the establishment choice of Vice President Hubert H. Humphrey bested McCarthy for the nomination. Dirty tricks ensued, and Nixon landed the White House.
Lawrence O'Donnell is the host of MSNBC's The Last Word with Lawrence O'Donnell. Expect the same sharp writing in his new book, Playing with Fire, which you experience every night on his show. It's a thrill to be taken back to the turbulence of the 60's with his insight and passionate political acumen. In conversation with Conan O'Brien, creator and host of Conan on TBS.
