Finding The Light In Dark Comedy: Learn the Elegance of Creating Compassion with Cheek
A session on dark comedy for writers and directors, we will explore how the subgenre benefits from its offbeat ability to make light of serious events. We will discuss what the keys to a successful dark comedy are, how to construct funny situations out of tragedy, and how to swing the laughs to your favour on the binary gauge which characterises whether a dark comedy is a hit or a miss. We will discuss how to effectively create relatable, comical narrative riffs to lower audiences resistance to taboo and difficult subjects, addressing how levity can be achieved by integrating humour with compassion, maximising the capacity of a joke to create respite from the plights of life. Taking the conversation all the way to household names, we will look at how to avoid the danger of taking jokes too far, which creates knee-jerk responses such as Sonys sanitised films initiative, and how strong the subgenre stands to be without causing an affront.
