Capitol Play Project -- stage reading
Join us at NOON on Saturday, September 9 in room G15 (the Senate Hearing Room below the rotunda) when a team of professional Twin Cities actors and members of the Capitol community will perform together in a staged reading* of the first public draft of the CAPITOL PLAY PROJECT.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT? Misunderstandings. Miscommunication. Mistaken identity? Idealism. Bureaucracy. Farce? It's just another typical day at the Minnesota State Capitol when an unconventional new governor starts his term and an idealistic new state employee gets mistaken for his new Chief of Staff. A series of comic chain reactions uncover how the business of state government really gets done and who really has access to power in the People's House.
We've gathered hundreds of true stories from people who work behind-the-scenes at the Minnesota State Capitol to give you an entertaining, enlightening, and emotional peek at the people who try to transcend partisanship and sensationalism to get things done for you.
Be a part of the first audience to discover how were translating the stories weve heard into a smart, emotionally-moving, thought-provoking new play. Stay afterward to share your thoughts.
SEATING IS LIMITED so make your reservations here. ADMISSION IS FREE but GUARANTEE YOUR SEAT with a $10 ticket (that helps us produce this work). No one will be turned be turned away for lack of funds but make the reservation now because fire codes will require that we turn people away for lack of space!

*WHAT IS A "STAGE READING"? A staged reading is an efficient way to share a draft of a play before it is finalized. Performers will be holding scripts in their hands. The technical elements of a full production, like lights and costumes as well as some of the movement, are read out loud rather than completely built in front of you.
O, THEN IS IT DULL? Absolutely not! A staged reading simply keeps the focus of the audience on the twists and turns of the plot and the poetry of the stories in the scriptthe things that the lights and costumes and movements will be supporting anyway. In a sense, an audience for a staged reading is getting the pure distillation of a play and often enjoy the way in which their own imaginations fill in the details.
BUT, WHY IS IT NOT A FULL PRODUCTION? At every step in the process of building a play from the hundreds of stories that members of the Capitol community shared with us, we want to check in with you. What works for you? What doesnt work for you? Where were you engaged and enlightened and surprised? Where did you feel suspense? Where were you moved? Are we being truthful and accurate? A staged reading is an excellent way to share an entertaining experience with an audience at a phase in the creative process where changes can still be made.
The full production will take place at the Capitol (all over the Capitol, in fact) from JANUARY 19-FEBRUARY 3, 2018.
DO I HAVE TO BE IN THE CAPITOL COMMUNITY TO ATTEND? No. Everyone is welcome at this reading.
Do I have to participate? Of course not. Simply by being in the audience youre helping us understand how the story works in public. If you only want to watch then leave, please feel welcome. But you are also welcome to stay for the discussion and tell us more.
WHAT IF I WANT TO BE A PERFORMER? We want you! Email us, and we'll send you more information about additional auditions for the full production. (You do not need to be in this reading to participate as a performer in the final production.)
This activity is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board and the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the arts and cultural heritage fund.
