Bach's Cantatas as he performed them
The fourthconcert in La Follia's all-Bach concert season features 3 Bach cantatas, performed in the manner we now know he typically performed them: using minimal orchestra and one-on-a-part chorus. The resulting transparency and flexibility is astonishing.
Featured is the famous solo cantata "Ich habe genug" with Gil Zilkha, bass. James Andrewes, frequent director for the Bach Cantata Project in Bloomington, Indiana, leads La Follia. Sarah Davol and Sarah Weiner perform on oboes d'amore. Marcus McGuff performs on Baroque flute.
Whit Martin-Whitaker with KMFA Classical 89.5 will present a free pre-concert lecture on Bach and the music to be performed starting 20 minutes before curtain.
The Program: Süßer Trost, mein Jesus kömmt, BWV 151 Ich habe genug, BWV 82 Liebster Gott, wenn werd ich sterben?, BWV 8 La Follia was founded in 1980, making it one of the oldest chamber ensembles of any kind in Austin. Among its numerous awards are three concerts cited as one of ten best classical music events of the year, as well as the 2016 Austin Critics Table award for overall Ensemble Performance. Redeemer Presbyterian Church is located in the revitalized area of East Austin, not far from the Metrorail MLK station. There is free, ample and safe parking adjacent to the church.
