Bach's Herd of Harpsichords
The third concert in La Follia's all-Bach concert season features is a reprise of one of its most popular concerts ever: Bach's concertos for 1, 2, 3, and 4 (!) harpsichords. Performing are director Keith Womer, Lenora McCroskey, Jeffrey Jones-Ragona, and William Cory, with the La Follia string ensemble.
There will be a lecture and demonstration on the harpsichord and Bachs pioneering concertos for the instrument 20 minutes before curtain.
**Note that the days for this concert are FRIDAY and SATURDAY** Bach was one of the first, and perhaps the first, to compose concertos featuring the harpsichord. He certainly wrote the most harpsichord concertos, which were often arrangements of his orchestral works. We will be performing the solo harpsichord concerto in A major, the concerto for two harpsichords in C minor (based on the famous two violin concerto), the concerto in C major for three harpsichords, and finally the concerto for four harpsichords, which is Bach's brilliant arrangement of Vivaldi's concerto for four violins. La Follia was founded in 1980, making it one of the oldest chamber ensembles of any kind in Austin. Among its numerous awards are three concerts cited as one of ten best classical music events of the year, as well as the 2016 Austin Critics Table award for overall Ensemble Performance. Redeemer Presbyterian Church is located in the revitalized area of East Austin, not far from the Metrorail MLK station. There is free, ample and safe parking adjacent to the church. The venue offers excellent acoustics and sight lines, and is ADA compliant.
