Schematic Energy Modeling for Architects

The architecture profession has tasked itself to be leaders in addressing climate change by adopting the 2030 Challenge. The Challenge looks to reduce the energy usage of buildings, currently accounting for approximately two-thirds of our national energy demand. Even with integrated design practices, energy is often still an afterthought. Energy usage does not get quantified until teams are well into the design process. However, architects have the knowledge to break away from the contemporary rules of thumb. Now, there are tools and resources available for architects to begin quantifying energy even in the early stages of design. This can be done even before an engineering consultant is engaged in the project. This is especially beneficial early in design, when changes are easier and less costly to make.

In this presentation, we will cover some of the low/no cost software available for those early energy studies, and learn what an energy model can and cannot do. If time allows, we will run through a quick shoe box model simulation to show how your teams can quantify energy and dollar savings to improve performance.
