Harpavus
Harpavus (A Celebration of the Nyckelharpa)
August 24-26, 2017
The first annual nyckelharpa gathering in North America! Other instruments are welcome to the celebration. It will be 3 days of concerts, jams, workshops, and a few surprises. This year's visiting artist is Josefin Berglund from Uppsala Sweden.
Don't know what a Nyckelharpa is? It's a Swedish instrument, also known as a "keyed fiddle." The first versionof the instruments is recognized to pre-date the violin by roughly200 years. It has 16 strings, 4 of which are bowed and the remaining 12 that are sympathetic (unplayed strings that sound and/orring out). It has three rows of wooden keys, which can be pressed into the strings to make sounds. The wooden keys are arranged chromatically, much like a piano or a guitar, allowing the nyckelharpa to be used as a versatile stringed instrument.
