Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance "Home Grown" Series presents VibeNation!
VibeNation has been together since 1992, performing in the Michiana area. The band has performed at The Elkhart Jazz Festival every year since. VibeNation also performed for WVPE Events like Meet Me in the Garden & Meet Me in the Gallery, as well as many corporate gigs. The band features premier Michiana jazz musicians: Chris French Woodwinds, Rafael Chavez Guitar, Sean Patrick Bass, Jim Bollero Drums and Jim Catalano Vibes. The band plays an eclectic mix of jazz from Standards to BeBop in swing and Latin styles, with inspired improvisations.
Clarinetist and saxophonist Chris French is equally at home in symphony orchestras, jazz groups, new music ensembles, and chamber music. A former resident of Los Angeles, he played in nearly every major studio, symphony orchestra, and Broadway show. Chris attended the Juilliard School, and he is on the faculty at Indiana University South Bend, Notre Dame, St. Mary's College and Goshen College, where he also directs the jazz band.
Jim Catalano is a drummer, vibes player and symphonic percussionist. He earned a Masters in Music from Notre Dame and has worked in the music industry since 1978. From 1983 till present Jim has worked for Ludwig Drums and Musser Vibes. Jim plays drums in two Big Bands, Truth in Jazz & Jazz Assemblage as well as several jazz combos including French Quarter. Jim started VibeNation in 1992 and the band has performed at The Elkhart Jazz Festival every year ever since.
Rafael Chávez is a Goshen College graduate that has been active in the regional music scene for more than 10 years. Currently playing throughout the Midwest with his band, Lalo Cura, Chávez is also an avid jazz guitarist and has played with local jazz legends such as Chris French (French Quarter), Jim Catalano (VibeNation), and Darrel Tidaback, among others. Chávez enjoys teaching guitar lessons and has been doing so since 2005 at TG Music and at Goshen Colleges Community School of the Arts.
Jim Bollero has a Bachelor of Science degree in music performance from Indiana State University. Masters of music performance degree from Ohio State University. He teaches percussion privately at Bollero Drum Studio in Elkhart. Bollero has also taught percussion at IUSB, Goshen College, Manchester College, and Grace College. He is currently playing drums with VibeNation, HippoSonics, and Melodious Funk.
Sean Patrick is a Graduate of Ball State University and is currently the Orchestra Director at Goshen HS. He performs both in the jazz and classical genres of music. Sean performs with VibeNation, The Elkhart Symphony, French Quarter, Tom Milo Band and Generations Trio.
