Romeo & Juliet by The New York State Ballet at the Lyric Theatre
Prokofiev composed this famous ballet music in 1935/36, inspired by the Shakespeare's tragic love story.
The ballet begins with feuding between the Capulets and the Montagues. Wearing a disguise, Romeo Montague enters a party at the Capulet house where he meets Juliet Capulet and instantly falls in love. The two proclaim their love in the famous balcony scene.
The Friar Laurence secretly marries the couple but Tybalt, Juliet's cousin, kills Romeo's friend Mercutio during a fight. Romeo then kills Tybalt and must flee into exile.
The friar devises a plan whereby Juliet will drink a sleeping potion and Romeo will awaken her and escape together but Romeo never receives word of the plan. Believing that she is really dead, Romeo drinks poison. Then when Juliet awakens, she sees that Romeo is dead and tragically stabs herself.
The setting for this dramatic ballet/love story is beautiful The Lyric Theatre, built in 1913 by the same architect who built the Eastman Theatre, and features a spectacular golden dome and stain glass windows. It is one of Rochester's most beautiful interiors.
