Stage Russia HD Presents: Eugene Onegin, starring Sergey Makovetskiy
Stage Russia films performances from the stages of Russia's greatest theatre companies and presents them in cinemas across the world. It's premiere screening in Houston is Rimas Tuminas' masterful take on Pushkin's classic story in verse. Tuminas' "Onegin" introduces two Eugenes, a younger Onegin (Viktor Dobronravov) who lives out a life of ego and contemptuousness, and an older Onegin (Sergey Makovetskiy) ruefully looking back on the errors of these ways. There are also two Lenskys (the man he was before dying in a duel and the man he might have become). Evgeney Kregzhde is a magnificent Tatyana, and Luidmilla Maksokova is memorable in her dual roles of Dance Master and Nanny.
This award-winning performance, referred to by the London Telegraph as "perhaps the most extraordinary night of theatre I have ever known" is a flawless work with enough gorgeous impression to last a lifetime.
In Russian with English subtitles. 210 minutes, which includes a 15 minute intermission.
