2013-wRECk Night, Session I
Looking for a taste of roller derby?
The SDD invites you to wRECk Night, a fun, low-pressure, low-impact workout, skating class and recreational roller derby for women and men ages 18 and over. WRECk Night is a place where injured or retired skaters can ease into skates and where beginners and referee hopefuls can build derby skills in preparation for SDD tryouts.
wRECk Night is 4:30-6:30 p.m. Sundays starting Feb. 3. In March, we'll add 8-10 p.m. Tuesdays. All practices are at the Garden City Gym, 160 Priscilla Thomas Way/Wheat Hill Road. There will be three sessions offered in 2013:
* Session I - February 3 - May 7 * Session II - May 14 - Aug. 13 * Session III - August 20 - Nov. 12
Starting in February, Sundays will offer Derby Skating 101, a beginner course in derby skills and cardio. In March, DS1O1 will move to Tuesdays. Sundays will become a "Vegas Style" pick-up, recreational roller derby scrimmage for experienced skaters.
Participants must be at least 18 years old. They must use a helmet, wrist guards, elbow pads, knee pads and a mouth guard. (Rental skates and some loaner gear is available for free use.) Use of tailbone or hip protective shorts is optional. The cost is $50 per session.
ONLINE REGISTRATION ONLY. CLASS INSTRUCTORS CANNOT PROCESS PAYMENT AND REGISTRATION.
Participants must have primary insurance or pay $60 annually for supplementary insurance through the Women's Flat Track Derby Association. WFTDA covers only catastrophic injury at practices. Contact derbydevils@gmail.com for help.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What if I haven't skated in a long time? Or never? wRECk Night's DS101 is a place to get a fun workout, receive training and just enjoy roller skating. Skating can be moderately difficult so it is important that you be somewhat fit before putting on roller skates for the first time.
How does the program work? DS101 will be run by an SDD trainer or coach and consist of skating fundamentals, WFTDA minimum skills, light cardio, lessons on positional blocking and light hitting, drills and games. Participants can bow out of any drill or take breaks whenever they want. Recreational Derby Nights are a new program offering weekly, "Vegas-style" pick-up scrimmages for experienced derby skaters. All wRECkers are welcome at DS101, but only experienced derby skaters and those cleared by the wRECk trainer may participate in scrimmages.
Will wRECk Night give me the skills needed to try out for the SDD? Yes! The WFTDA Minimum Skills Test will be offered at the end of each session for those interested in trying out for the SDD competitive league.
Can I or my friends and family just come and watch? Sorry, no spectators and no children please. Everyone who shows up to wRECk Night should be ready to skate! (Exceptions made for members of the Savannah Junior DerbyTaunts.)
How do I join? Participants may register on brownpapertickets.com by the second day of each session. New participants must sign a waiver saying they understand the risks of roller skating, and complete a new member form providing their name, address, phone number and email address.
Can I continue re-enrolling in wRECk night? Yes! Each session will continue sharing exercise, skating and roller derby basic skills in a fun, low-pressure environment.
What do I bring? * Proof of age * Water bottle * Comfortable workout clothes * Thick socks * Mouthguard * Derby gear if you've got it.
