Rooftop gardens are hidden delights, and the Upper West has its share of green gems. Author ("Roof Explorers Guide") and blogger Leslie Adatto will take our walking tour to a whole new level with a peek at 3 rooftop gardens along Broadway.
Well start atop a pre-war co-op, luxuriating in an abundance of annuals and herbs, then skip down a few levels to the wonderful Lotus Garden, a community garden planted on top of a parking garage. Back up well go to another co-op, with pergolas, fruit trees, and views galore from water towers to the Hudson. Volunteer "sky-level" gardeners will additionally share what they have learned about wind, weight, irrigation, paving --and building regulations!
Whether offering stunning views or simply access to a little greenery and fresh air, these urban oases bring nature's magic to life above our city streets.
Guide Leslie Adatto is an expert when it comes to New York City Rooftops. Author of "Roof Explorers Guide: 101 New York City Rooftops", she has been exploring the old and the new since 2009. She loves blogging about her adventures and is an advocate for public rooftops.
