Jeanne d'Arc au Bûcher (Joan of Arc at the Stake) is a large-scale dramatic production and is the only work that has become ensconced in the classical music repertoire. It has enjoyed renewed international interest thanks to global productions featuring the popular French actress Marion Cotillard. The work is a hybrid of Honegger's eclectic score and sung/spoken libretto by poet/playwright Paul Claudel. Odyssey Operas performance will feature the 50+ voices of the Harvard-Radcliffe Collegium Musicum.
In Jeanne d'Arc au Bûcher, written by Swiss composer Arthur Honegger with text by poet Paul Claudel, we see Joan as she is condemned to burn at the stake and sees her life flash before her eyes. With her confessor Brother Dominique reading from the book of her life, we see her trial and conviction, journeying all the way back to her pastoral and carefree childhood. In this dramatic oratorio, we experience the martyrs last moments through a striking combination of spoken word and music, including the electronic ondes Martenot, with a range of musical mediums spanning from plain chant, Baroque dance, and folk song to jazz rhythms, humming, shouting, and classical music of the 1930s.
Sung in English.
Run time: 80 minutes with no intermission
