Whitehorse With special guest Daniel Romano
UPSTAIRS CABARET (19+), 15 Bastion Square, Victoria Sunday, January 27, 2013, Doors 7:00PM
"Their potential is fully realised on their stunningly accomplished sophomore record." Kerry Doyle - exclaim.ca The classic tale of musical romance continues for Luke Doucet and Melissa McClelland, the husband and wife duo behind Whitehorse. One year after their debut, Whitehorse returns in ambitious fashion with their new album The Fate of the World Depends on this Kiss.
Whitehorse's live show is built on mesmerizing guitar work and smoldering vocal chemistry, but also brings much more to the stage with complex layers of percussion and keyboard and tangled like an embrace with the help of looping pedals.
The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss is everything the talented pair's first full length promised. As a whole, the album reveals the range of creative possibility that only expands as Whitehorse develops and focuses their sound. Song by song, the record takes surprising turns; while each track confidently bears Whitehorse's signature blistering guitar work and love-knotted vocals, their willingness to take risks and ability to pull them off makes for captivating listening. With savage talent and tender hearts, Whitehorse expertly plays both lion and lamb on The Fate of This World Depends on This Kiss.
"The Fate of the World Depends on This Kiss further establishes Whitehorse as a songwriting duo not afraid to push creative boundaries." -The National Post
"Simply put, McClelland and Doucet are kinda perfect together; their voices either blend effortlessly or bounce back and forth with complementary character" -Toronto Star
"Each listen begs for instant repeat gratification." - Vancouver Weekly
"Their assurance is sexy; the songcraft, nimble. Whitehorse is the Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway of Canadian roots rock" - The Globe & Mail
"It's their obvious passion, love and chemistry that makes these beautifully arranged, masterfully written alt-country love letters shinea beauty of a disc." - Uptown Magazine
"Whitehorse is raw throughout, leaving the edges sharp and letting the notes cut deep." - Vue Weekly
"They trade vocal parts and harmonies effortlessly, while Doucet confirms he's arguably the most tasteful and dynamic guitarist we have." - exclaim.ca
"Doucet can play a mean guitar liveproving his Juno and Polaris Music Prize nominations were well earned." Alan Ranta
Opening for Whitehorse is another Juno and Polaris Music Prize-nominated artist, Daniel Romano. Best known as a founding member of Attack In Black, and a contributor to City And Colour, Romero's newest project is something entirely different. Sleep Beneath the Willow, his sophomore release, mixes timeless songwriting with late '60s, AM radio country arrangements baring the influence of artists such as Lee Hazelwood and George Jones. Romano explains that all his recent songs are heavily influenced by the production and style of classic country music, from the lyrics to the guitar tone. Approaching his music like a true craftsman, Romano produced, engineered, and performed the majority of the instruments on Sleep Beneath the Willow.
