Erotic Jewish Humor: The Oxymoron Show
Wednesday, January 16 at 7:30pm
written/performed by Howard Lieberman
presented by the 2013 Minneapolis Jewish Humor Festival
In Howard Lieberman's not-so-humble-enough opinion, conventional wisdom says that a Jewish storyteller is either a quasi-rabbinical soul with a scraggly beard who uses storytelling as an allegorical window onto Talmudic truths, OR a Woody Allen-esque self-deprecating Jewish everyman. Howard is neither of these. Jewish humor is too often dark humor that grows out of the Jewish history of oppressionlaughing in the face of evil. Sometimes a bit "naughty" (burlesque humor for instance), but never explicitly erotic. Erotica is what the Gentiles enjoy after a few too many martinis, but certainly not a Jewish thing. This show is an attempt to destroy conventional wisdom.
Howard Lieberman is a Jew. A devoutly agnostic left-wing Jew, but a Jew nonetheless. He has been a comedic storyteller for almost all of his 63 years. Howard grew up on the North Side of Chicago with a womanizing gay tap dancer for a father and a humorless math teacher for a mother, which may explain his wild mood swings. Around 1969, he moved to NYC to get educated and find fame and fortune as an Irish ceili dancer and corporate attorney. Twenty years and one child later, he moved to Republican Stillwater, MN, with no fame, very modest fortune, a glib tongue and a jaded sense of humor. A headhunter for attorneys by day, Howard's true passion remains grounded in storytelling/ performance art that uses sex and humor to force people to confront the political issues of the day.
