Narita (of High Rise, Japan), Bill Orcutt, The Odyssey Cult
All the way from the Tokyo underground, NARITA, the guitarist of legendary Japanese psychedelic punks HIGH RISE, who changed the course of the underground musical landscape in the 80s with their blown-out beyond-comprehension biker-speed riff-mania and monolithic releases on the great PSF label of Japan. In the 90s and 2000s HIGH RISE were instrumental in inspiring a whole new wave of blown out, over-the-top guitar driven American psychedelic bands like Monoshock, Comets On Fire and Earthless (to name just a few.) In this extremely rare bay area appearance, NARITA will be backed by members of LA's OVER GAIN OPTIMAL DEATH and the trio will be performing classic HIGH RISE material. Underground psychedelic music fans~ DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW!
It's only been eight years since BILL ORCUTT's first post-resurrection single appeared out of nowhere. While his mangled 4-string shredding in legendary Miami outfit Harry Pussy borrowed as much from free jazz as hardcore, Orcutt's re-emergence as a blues guitarist has been a completely arresting, exhausting and exhilarating ride. Bill's new self-titled LP, his first solo electric studio album, is a tremendous capstone to dozens of releases issued on the artist's own Palilalia label. That one would someday be listening to Orcutt playing standards may have seemed unthinkable during HP's mid-90s heyday, but perhaps more shocking is just how gorgeous this record sounds. Rich chords and delicate arpeggios shimmer with vibrato, and Ornette Coleman's "Lonely Woman" sounds just as radical here as it did six decades ago. Orcutt's playing remains striking, bold and inspired. This may be the best Orcutt record yet, and yes that says a lot, but beauty is still a rare thing.
THE ODYSSEY CULT is the solo, amp melt & high volume ambient project of Ethan Miller (Heron Oblivion, Feral Ohms, Howlin Rain, Comets On Fire.) A primordial avalanche of electric guitar music. A post-modern science-fiction odyssey in sound, equally in homage to the great minimalists and loop pioneers as to guitar-oriented Krautrock, cult film soundtrack music and the feedback-riding, amp destroyers of the 60s to present day. This is the Odyssey Cult's record release for it's debut; a two album set and sci-fi poetry book.
