On the Twentieth Century
ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY is a musical farce about a glamorous movie star being pursued by her mentor and former lover, a washed-up Broadway producer. Both are passengers aboard The Twentieth Century, a state-of-the-art train traveling from Chicago to New York City, circa 1930s. Along for the ride are a crazed religious fanatic, who claims to be a wealthy patron of the arts; the movie star's current beau, an empty-headed leading man; and passengers from all walks of life, who each believe they have written Broadway's next great hit. The producer has 16 hours until he lands in NYC where creditors await. Can he lure his old flame back to the stage, before his career is ruined?
A cult musical, if ever there was one, ON THE TWENTIETH CENTURY was a hit when it originally premiered on Broadway in 1978, but it's lavish sets, period costumes and soaring, but complex score make it a daunting show to produce. The Proof Doubt Closer Theatre Company is proud to present this hilarious, sophisticated operetta/farce with music by Cy Coleman (Sweet Charity, City of Angels) and book and lyrics by Betty Comden and Adolph Green (Singin' in the Rain, The Will Rogers Follies).
