Opus 7 Vocal Ensemble performs "I Sing of a Maiden"
"Opus 7, one of the most esteemed musical groups anywhere" - Richard Campbell, The Gathering Note, December 2009
Mary, the mother of Jesus, has long been a major focus of worship in all Christian traditions, and there is a long history of texts celebrating her, and the miracle of the virgin birth. Opus 7 explores this rich tradition with modern settings of ancient texts in the most appropriate setting in Seattle, the magnificent St. James Cathedral. We continue our year-long focus on the music of our resident composer, John Muehleisen, with three very different works in this vein: "This Night", accompanied on harp by Catherine Barrett; and settings of two Latin texts, "A solis ortus cardine" and "Alma Redemptoris Mater." We'll also perform William Mathias' "Ave Rex" with Cathedral Organist Joseph Adam, and works by Herbert Howells, John Tavener, Frank Ferko, Peter Warlock and Arnold Bax.
Opus 7 was formed by Loren Ponten in 1992 and features some of the Northwest's finest choral artists. The group is known for its glorious sound, ardent musicality, and innovative programming of late 19th-, 20th-, and 21st-century choral repertoire.
