Merrimans' Playhouse Jazz Performance Series presents The Deans List!
The Deans List is a Michiana Jazz combo playing straight ahead swing, blues, ballads, and Latin tunes with their own twist. The group was formed by percussionist Sonny Carreno and guitarist Danny Dean, thus the name. They met as guest musicians at a gig and decided they wanted to form their own band that focused on jazz. Since then the personnel has evolved. Danny has returned to his native Miami. The group currently features Carreno on drums, Sam Que on saxophone, Gabriel Hernandez on piano, and Randy Horst on bass, and can be found playing in regional venues and at the Elkhart Jazz Festival. Guest guitarist Jamie Pawelski will be a joining The Deans List at Merrimans Playhouse.
Sonny Carreno grew up in Alice, Texas. He has a long and varied history as a drummer for a wide range of groups both in his native Texas and in northern Indiana. Often the drummer of choice for local recordings, hes also a member of the regional Spanish rock band Lalo Cura, which has opened for groups like Los Lonely Boys.
Sam Que (pronounced KAY) is a saxophonist from the former instrument capital of the world," Elkhart, Indiana. Sams first notes could be heard from the pews of his fathers church. At 18 he began to gig in South Bend while attending IUSB, and was a regular at Merrimans Playhouse open jams. In addition to The Deans List, Sam is also a member of Lalo Cura. Sam has been a guest artist in many local bands, including After Ours, Janet Hines Norris, Jua Coates, and Babylon Sneakers.
Randy Horst grew up in Denver, CO. He first took up the bass in college to be part of his friends band, mainly playing folk, bluegrass, and country. About 15 years ago he fell in love with Jazz. In addition to playing in The Deans List, hes also been a guest bassist for a variety local groups such as Vibe Nation, Drop the Dog, and St. Joseph Valley Camerata.
Jamie Pawelski grew up in South Bend, Indiana who has been studying guitar since age six. He has background in classical, jazz, and blues. He is currently the guitarist for local Steely Dan tribute band Babylon Sneakers.
