A Day Trip to Bestselling Author Jane Hamilton's Wisconsin Apple Orchard
Among the unforgettable characters In Jane Hamilton's most recent novel "The Excellent Lombards," about a girl coming of age on her family's apple farm in Southern Wisconsin, is the apple orchard itself--the kind of Eden that captures a sensitive child's imagination, but is subject to the whims and cruelties of the Real World--like weather, the frailties of human relationships, and a growing consumer passion for Honeycrisp apples.
This fall, Bookends & Beginnings is thrilled to offer readers an extraordinary chance to visit Jane Hamilton at the real orchard in Wisconsin that served as the story's model.
We'll leave Evanston together on a bus at 10 am in order to reach the local public library (which was also featured fictionally in the book) for a luncheon catered by Chef Jaclyn Trimble of Wholesome Harvest Meals, including a menu featuring apples and a talk by Jane about the book, followed by our own general book discussion. Then we'll walk a short distance over to the orchard for a tour and apple tasting and other orchard activities--and of course, a chance to acquire some apples to take home with you. Then we'll return on the bus to Bookends & Beginnings by 5 pm.
Each $90 ticket includes round-trip bus fare, lunch, and one paperback copy of "The Excellent Lombards," which can be mailed to your home in advance so you can read it before the trip, and which, of course, Jane will sign for you at the lunch.
Space is limited to 30 participants so make your reservation ASAP to assure your spot!
