Great Discussions 2017 is a participatory course designed for those informed and thoughtful people among us who love to engage in real discussion and respectful debate over issues of the day. This course is a forum for exchanging ideas about international and domestic public affairs and America's place in the world.
The subject of this meeting and the next three meetings will be The Four Freedoms.
The Four Freedoms were goals articulated by United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt on January 6, 1941. In an address known as the Four Freedoms speech (technically the 1941 State of the Union address), he proposed four fundamental freedoms that people "everywhere in the world" ought to enjoy: Freedom of speech; Freedom of worship; Freedom from want; and Freedom from fear.
This Great Discussion course is a four-part series and we begin with a discussion of Freedom of the Press, one our fundamental rights of free speech.
Our guest speaker, Kathleen Choal, President and G.M. of KSBY, will talk to us about the principles of good journalism and give us practical insights into the challenges presented by todays political environment. Among the discussion questions will be: Is truth dead, as proclaimed by Time Magazine? Is fake news really a thing, and if so whos thing is it? Are there alternative facts, as suggested by the Presidents advisors? Can the White House just stop talking to the press? If the President doesnt like a story can he really sue the press for libel?
While Paul Worsham's education and career focused on consumer electronics marketing, he has a deep and active interest in world affairs and America's place in the world.
