Steve Brooks
Veteran Austin Americana songwriter Steve Brooks will be bringing his Texas-sized tales of love, laughter and spirituality to the Thumbnail Theater on Saturday, July 29. Brooks has been described as a mixture of two other guys named Brooks: Garth and Mel. His Garth side co-wrote the Slaid Cleaves classic One Good Year, as well as songs recorded by nationally known Americana artists like Christine Albert, The Flyin As, Danny Santos and Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe. At heart, hes a Guy Clark-style storyteller, with the knack for turning phrases youd expect from a former reporter for the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Then theres his Mel side, which wrote a satirical song-a-week for Jim Hightower's nationally-syndicated radio show, as well as appearing on TVa "I've Got a Secret" as six-time World Pun Champion. Through many of his songs, there also runs a strong spiritual current a reflection of lay sermons hes delivered at more than 30 Unitarian churches. More than 70 Folk and Americana DJs have spun Steves last album, Chasing Grace. His new release, Ill Take You Home - crowdfunded through the faith of more than 160 fans - is spreading Steves songs even farther beyond the borders of Texas. Interested listeners can sample some for themselves at www.stevebrooks.net.
