Heinemann/Drobka/Blair Trio
Arts + Literature Laboratory presents the Heinemann/Drobka/Blair Trio in concert on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at 8pm (doors at 7:30pm). $10 in advance online. Advance ticket sales end 1 hour before the performance starts and remaining tickets at the door.
Jakob, Matt and Devin have played together in various configurations for several years, but have only recently come together to perform as a trio. Bridging the gap between improvisation, experimental, and jazz, the band offers listeners music that is constantly searching for new ground while still maintaining a warmth and love for the expressive possibilities of music.
Jakob Heinemann is a bass player, composer and educator from Madison, Wisconsin. Taking up the bassat age 10, he has worked in professional contexts since age 13, performing all over the Midwest atvenues such as the Fox Valley Performing Arts Center, the Trout Museum of Art, Chicago's Park WestTheatre, the Museum of Wisconsin Art, and the Overture Center for the Arts in Madison, in addition to alarge majority of the jazz venues in Madison, Milwaukee and the Fox Valley area. These many years ofplaying experience have led him to work in a wide diversity of genres with many well-respectedmusicians, including Devin Drobka, Hal Rammel, Andrew Trim, Jon Deitemyer, Dane Richeson, PaulHastil, and Qanun virtuoso Ali Paris. His recent projects include Indie-rock outfit Riverbug, the hip-hop/neo-soul collective Backpocket, and his ongoing original music jazz septet Good Trouble, in addition to work on his own music for quartet.Jakob graduated from Lawrence University with adegree in Double Bass Performance in2017. His main mentors at Lawrence included Bill Carrothers,Matt Turner, Mark Urness, and Patty Darling.
Devin Drobka, drummer, composer and educator has been playing drums for the past 20 years. Devin is currently one of the most in demand performers and educators in the Midwest.He received his BMA in Jazz Drumming Performance from Berklee College of Music in 09'where he had the chance to study with Terri Lynn Carrington, Bob Tamigni, Skip Hadden, Jamey Haddad, Kenwood Dennard, Jon Hazilla, Ralph Peterson Jr, Ian Froman, and the master drummer Bob Moses. Currently Devin teaches at the West End Conservatory, Lake Country Conservatory and at his house. Devin is also teaching drumset and helping coach the combos at UW-Whitewater.You can catch Devin performing with his group Bell Dance Songs, Lesser Lakes Trio, Johannes Wallamann Group, Paul Silbergliet Trio, Dim Lighting, Argopelter, Lady Cannon, John Christensen's Atlas, and Soft Alarm.
Matt Blairis a pianist, composer, improviser, and educator currently based in Minneapolis, MN. As a pianist, he has performed with a number of groups in a variety of styles at venues includingThe Bay View Jazz Fest,Chicagos Park West, Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art, Milwaukees Jazz Estate and historic Pfister Hotel, the Museum of Wisconsin Art, and The Trout Museum of Art.He has had the honor of performing with many great improvisers including John Christensen, Devin Drobka, José Encarnación, Hal Rammel, Dane Richeson, and Chris Weller.Along with Drobka and Christensen, he is currently in the process of developing a repertoire of original trio compositions to be performed and recorded in the near future.
