Three progressive folk acts each with a unique spin on the genre. The Western Den's folk harmonies with ambient textures produce a sound all their own. Honeysuckle's older influences and traditional instrumentation are combined with modern effects creating an entirely original sound. And Chicago native and Berklee College of Music graduate Aurora Birch's contemplative songwriting and complex, gritty guitar arrangements will hold you spell bound. All in all a compelling night at The Lizard Lounge!
THE WESTERN DEN Formed in February 2013, and driven by a shared passion to create music with purpose, The Western Den is the collaborative work of Deni Hlavinka and Chris West, who together, blend compelling folk harmonies with ambient textures to produce a sound all their own. The duo released their debut EP, Battle Hymns, in May 2013 and premiered themselves to the public, opening for Melissa Ferrick on the northeastern leg of her national tour, in the summer of the same year. They have since shared the stage with artists such as Saintseneca, Animal Flag, Tall Heights, Paula Cole, Mark Erelli, and the Boston Pops.
"People under the spell of the Western Den often watch them with their heads tilted upwards, their mouths slightly open, pulsing subconsciously in time to the music. Its like observing someone having a very strange dream. (Zoe Atlas, Sound of Boston: Local Spotlight)
HONEYSUCKLE Honeysuckle is a progressive folk act that blends older influences and traditional instrumentation with modern effects and inspiration.
Comprised of Holly McGarry, Benjamin Burns, and Chris Bloniarz, the trio can frequently be found performing in the Boston area and surrounding cities in the Northeast, playing alongside bands like Boy & Bear, The Ballroom Thieves, Whetherman, The Novel Ideas, The Western Den, Sam Moss, Honeyfoot, Shook Twins, John Craigie, Grey Season, and others.
AURORA BIRCH Chicago native and Berklee College of Music graduate Aurora Birch is a folk-rock singer/songwriter based in the greater Boston area. She specializes in heartfelt, contemplative songwriting, weaving purposefully through the spectrum of nonsense and lucidity, of infinite and infinitesimal, of delicately fanciful and brutally blunt.
Commanding tradition while still proving herself an innovator, Auroras music sounds like the thesis statement of a fundamental force. Drawing upon old time, folk, and a childhood infused with blues and rock n roll, she crafts complex, gritty guitar arrangements, evincing her background in arranging and orchestration and deftly framing her exfoliating voice.
