The Pink Warehouse
Charlottesville, VA
Share this event:

Come spend a one-of-a-kind evening as part of a blindfolded audience at the Pink Warehouse in downtown Charlottesville.  In an effort to enhance, inform & challenge the way you listen to live music, three of Charlottesville's preeminent folk acts will be performing in the round and in the dark. Ticket price includes a Potter's Craft Cider blind tasting at the start of the evening, and a glass of cider after the music.

Upon entering the library of the historic Pink Warehouse, you will be given a blindfold and led to your seat.  For the next hour and a half, you will experience a concert with heightened aural perception and no visual or technological distractions.  All three performers tour internationally and have appeared on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series.

About the bands:

David Wax Museum (duo)

The roots of David Wax Museum stretch back nearly a decade, and all the way from New England to Mexico. As a student at Harvard, Wax began traveling south of the border to study and immerse himself in the countrys traditional music and culture. Back in Boston, he met fiddler/singer Suz Slezak, whose love of traditional American and Irish folk music fused with Waxs Mexo-Americana into a singular, energetic blend that captivated audiences and critics alike. Their 2010 breakout performance at the Newport Folk Festival made them the most talked-about band of the weekend, with NPR hailing them as pure, irresistible joy. They released a trio of albums that earned escalating raves everywhere from SPIN and Entertainment Weekly (who described them as sounding like Andrew Bird with a Mexican folk bent) to the New York Times and The Guardian (which dubbed the music global crossover at its best). They earned an invitation to return to Newport, this time on the main stage, as well as dates supporting The Avett Brothers, The Carolina Chocolate Drops, Buena Vista Social Club, and more.

Diane Cluck --

Diane Cluck is a Charlottesville-based singer-songwriter. Her ecstatic vocal style has been noted for its uniquely clipped, glottal beauty. She accompanies herself on instruments ranging from guitar to piano, harmonium, zither, percussion, and toy accordion.

Shawn Bosler of The Village Voice wrote that "she is likely one of the most refined and elegant songwriters in all of neo-folkdom. A brilliant idiosyncratic guitarist, a witty and wise lyricist, an imaginative melody writer with a powerful voice; her dark and introspective tunes are utterly captivating, sorta like an earthier Kate Bush. Watch her spellbind the room."[16][17]

David Garland of NPR Music described her sound as "an unlikely mix of Aaron Neville, the Baka people and Joni Mitchell." Praising Cluck's singing for being "unaffected yet unusual", he notes that she "handles her guitar in a distinctive way, often plucking the strings where the neck meets the body of the guitar, producing a harp-like tone."

Lowland Hum --

Based in Charlottesville, Virginia, Lowland Hum is husband/wife team Daniel and Lauren Goans. Together they are a prolific, two-person creative factory. They write, arrange and produce all of their own music, and have honed a cohesive visual arts aesthetic to match the hushed simplicity of their sound.

Lowland Hum's songs have been described as poetic and evocative, and their arrangements minimal, hushed and dynamic. They continue to attract a growing body of listeners around the world. Daniel and Lauren spent the summer of 2016 creating their third full-length album in a friend's attic. The album, Thin, came out on February 10, 2017, and is their "deepest collaboration to date" according to the band. They completed a nationwide headline tour, interspersed with supporting Josh Ritter, Jesca Hoop and Penny and Sparrow, in the first half of 2017, they will perform at a handful of festivals this summer and embark on their first European tour in the fall.
