Don't miss our freaky 70's hippie exploitation double-feature on Tuesday, as the Grindhouse Film Festival returns to the New Beverly Cinema for another night of vintage cinematic weirdness and sleaze!
First up is the incredibly rare and completely bizarre AN AMERICAN HIPPIE IN ISRAEL (1972), filled with murderous mimes, robots, blood thirsty sharks, free loving debauchery and poignant anti-war monologues by raving mad hippies. All this and more is provided in writer-director-prophet Amos Sefer's far-out allegorical independent film. Clad in his dirty jeans, beads, and a crude hand-made rabbit-fur vest, Israeli Actor Asher Tzarfati plays American "hippie" Mike. Thumbing a ride, the hippie meets up with red-haired, sunglass-clad vixen, Elizabeth. When Elizabeth offers the hippie a ride in her groovy convertible, they are soon confronted by some rather menacing mimes. The Hippie divines that he and Elizabeth (and some other hippie friends) should find a place where they can live in peace and freedom. They set off in search of a desert island utopia. The first act of freedom is to strip down and go for a skinny dip and then do a wriggly hippie "hoe down" on the beach. But the fun doesn't last long. The perils of survival and the basic necessities of food, water and shelter begin to take their toll on the naive hippie clan as Eden quickly devolves into a fiendish hell.
Following this, we'll take a strange trip with HAROLD AND MAUDE'S Bud Cort in HALLUCINATION STRIP (1975), an extremely obscure Italian film from "one-time-only" director Lucio Marcaccini filled with drug deals gone bad, psychedelic rock, nudity, and epic hallucination scenes. This one is completely rare and obscure even on video and will be screened from a nice looking original 35mm print, don't miss!
The event starts at 7:30pm, and admission for the double-feature, raffle and reel of rare exploitation trailers is still only $8.00. You won't find a bigger bang for your entertainment dollar during this economic meltdown!
