"The media and political cynicism that 'the plague of violence in our communities cannot be overcome' is not true. It canone child at a time." "A challenge facing psychoanalysis today is making its concepts and clinical findings more relevant and useful in addressing community issues of trauma and violence." Dr. Mark Smaller, 8 years ago developed Project Realize a treatment and research program in an alternative public high school in Chicago. For the past seven years this psychoanalytically oriented program delivers treatment to adolescents who have been expelled from other schools. This full immersion approach, which includes teachers, security guards and parents, has increased graduation rates, school attendance and learning.
This lecture will outline psychoanalytic strategies to solve these issues with examples of psychoanalytic work in the community, and how both the community and psychoanalysis moves forward and are enriched by this critical work.
Dr. Smaller is the president elect of the American Psychoanalytic Association.
